Western Governors Ask Obama to Act Quickly on Energy

The governors of the 19 states in the Western Governors Association met this last week and outlined the steps they believe the new administration should take in the first 100 days to address climate change and energy issues.

According to an AP article, the WGA is recommending that the new administration:

  • develop clean energy technology
  • establishing an 'aggressive' greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal to help stop global warming
  • propose a mandatory national system for reducing GHG emissions through market-based mechanisms
  • improve mass transportation
  • bring more fuel-efficient and near-zero emission vehicles on to the market
  • develop renewable resources such as wind and solar energy
  • establish an oil import reduction goal
  • expanding the electric grid
  • create technology to have almost no GHG emissions from new coal-fired electric plants in 10 years and from existing generation by 2030
